[Hotel Review] Hotel Edit Yokohama - A Western-style Boutique Hotel

Just outside of Tokyo lies Yokohama, Japan’s second largest city and a popular destination as a day trip from Tokyo. Recently the Yokohama area has also become popular among visitors as a base for exploring the east part of Japan too; with easy access to the bullet train (Shinkansen) from Shin-Yokohama, generally bigger rooms and lower prices than in Tokyo the city is an attractive alternative for those who are familiar with the area.

One of the hotels that recently is gaining popularity in the area is Hotel Edit Yokohama, a 3-star Western-style boutique hotel that opened up its doors to customers in 2015. Hotel Edit Yokohama can be reached in 6 min by foot from both Sakuragicho Station and Bashamichi Station, from which you can get to Haneda International Airport in approximately 40 min and to Narita International Airport in around 105 min.

Hotel Edit Yokohama is a part of UDS, a group that specializes in fancy accommodations with budgets ranging from low budget ¥3,000 hostels to ¥30,000 luxury hotels. Some of their other hotels include the popular Bunka Hostel Tokyo, Grids Akasaka and Nihombashi-East, On the Marks Kawasaki and Hotel Kanra Kyoto. One of the things the hotels in this group have in common is that they put a lot of efforts into the common space - in the case of Hotel Edit Yokohama they have a cozy area on the first floor where guests can enjoy complimentary coffee and relax.

I have written more about this below. But first, a short introduction of the guest rooms.

Guest Room - Small Double Room

For this visit I stayed at one of the hotel's Small Double rooms. This room type comes with a Semi Double bed that can be used for either one and two guests. The room size is 15 sq.m., so if you are two guests traveling with large suitcases I would recommend going for a regular Twin or Double room.

Bathroom

The hotel room had a standard bathroom with toilet and shower. It also came with a couple of useful amenities such as a toothbrush, a hairbrush/comb, and a razor.

Facilities - Common Area

The hotel has a common area where guests are free to hang out during their stay. In the common area, there's a coffee machine where guests can enjoy complimentary coffee. The coffee machine also comes with disposable cups enabling guests to do take-out.

In the common area you can find a number of sofas at your disposal. Some of them come with curtains that you can close, and thus enjoy almost full privacy while enjoying your coffee.

On the first floor they also have a section where they display and sell local souvenirs, including designer items related to the hotel such as the "[E] Hotel Edit" cups you find in the guest rooms.

Some other useful facilities worth mentioning are their coin laundry machines on the guest floors and their umbrellas ready to be borrowed if you get taken aback by the weather.

Breakfast

One of the unique things about Hotel Edit Yokohama is their amazing breakfast buffet. During my stay the menu included exotic alternatives like pumpkin hummus and shrimp & tomato couscous. They also have various of (sweet) bread if you prefer that. The breakfast buffet also comes with dessert, including fruit.

The hotel takes pride in their french toast, so if you end up staying at the hotel you might want to try a piece.

What to do
For people staying a night at Hotel Edit Yokohama, I would recommend having dinner/a couple of drinks at the Yokohama Brewery situated on the opposite side of the street to the hotel. This restaurant specializes in locally produced ingredients in their dishes, and as you probably have guessed they also produce their own beer.

The Japanese garden next to Yokohama Stadium is only a station away

There is also a lot to see in the area, and among other things, I would recommend a visit to Japan's biggest China Town - Chuukagai (中華街). You can also find a number of seasonal events that are taking place in the city, such as the Christmas Market in the Red Brick Warehouse (Akarengan) or the Pikachu festival held around Sakuragicho in August. Yokohama also has several interesting museums such as the Cup Noodle Museum and the Yokohama Orbi Planetarium where you can try their blue Earth Burger. Or you might just want to stroll around the Minato Mirai area and enjoy the evening scenery.
